The beating of the Lebanese Minister of Energy (video)

Video clips circulating in Lebanon, on Sunday, showed what it said was a severe beating of the Lebanese Energy Minister, Walid Fayyad, as he was leaving a café in Beirut.

The Lebanese "An-Nahar" website stated that activists arrested the Minister of Energy and Water while he was in a public place, and beat him, causing him bruises on his face.

The attack took place after a number of Lebanese drowned off Tripoli, and they demanded that he justify the complete power outage for the citizens of Lebanon.

Electricity generation has completely stopped in Lebanon after the last two power plants were shut down as a result of running out of fuel, an official in the Ministry of Energy announced on Friday.

On Thursday, Electricité du Liban announced that the Deir Ammar (North) and Al-Zahrani (South) plants had stopped working due to running out of fuel, and they are the only two that were in service recently.

The power outage is one of the aspects of the severe economic crisis that has afflicted Lebanon since late 2019, as it caused the deterioration of the value of its currency against the dollar, and the lack of foreign exchange allocated for import, which was reflected in a shortage of fuel, medicines and other basic commodities.
