A cryptocurrency trader revealed how he lost $650,000 at the hands of scammers who hacked his iCloud account, according to a report by The Sun newspaper.

Dominique Lacovon had a large number of valuable cryptocurrencies and "non-redeemable tokens" (NFTs) stored in the MetaMask digital wallet app before cyber-thieves could steal it.

Lacovon wrote on Twitter that it all started with a phone call he thought was from Apple, and he suspected it might be a scam at first, so he ignored him.

But when Apple's caller ID appeared again and saw that it was an Apple number, he decided to call him.

The scammer on the other end of the phone said Lacophone's account had been hacked and requested a code sent to his phone.

But two seconds later, his Meta Mask wallet was completely erased.

The MetaMask wallet is a software wallet for cryptocurrencies used to interact with the Ethereum blockchain, which users of the service can access through an extension in the browser or through a mobile application and then use it to interact with decentralized applications.

Lacovon claims that the hackers succeeded in this by obtaining the 12-word “initial phrase” that is important for accessing a cryptocurrency wallet and should not be shared with anyone.

Little did Lacovon know that Meta-Mask automatically stores the initial phrase file on iCloud from his iPhone.

MetaMask did not comment on the incident, but tweeted, warning users, "If you enable iCloud backup for app data, this will include a password-encrypted MetaMask wallet."

"If your password is not strong enough, and someone scams your iCloud credentials, it could mean your money has been stolen," the app added.

And she gave advice to users on how to disable iCloud backup: “You can disable iCloud backup specifically for the Meta Mask app by turning off the switch by going to Settings > Profile > iCloud > Manage Storage > Backups.

"If you want to avoid iCloud that surprises you with making unwanted backups in the future, you can turn off this feature by going to Settings, then iCloud ID, and turning off iCloud Backup."
