More than half of French people do not recycle their packaging, or not in the right way, mainly because of the difficulty of mastering the sorting rules which vary from one community to another.

Europe 1 takes stock with a specialist to help you sort better.

Yellow bins, blue bins or household waste: more than half of French people do not recycle their waste systematically or not always in the right way.

The fault, perhaps, of the sorting rules which vary from one community to another, and which are changing in most French cities.

From now on, whatever their composition, you have to put all your packaging in the sorting bin.

At the microphone of Europe 1, Stéphanie Foucart, director of citizen mobilization for the recycling organization Citeo, takes stock.

"You can sort all metal packaging, paper packaging, cardboard, those that are open... And for plastic packaging, there is a small difference between the territories", explains Stéphanie Foucart.

"A third of French people will sort plastic bottles and flasks. And there are two-thirds of them who will be able to sort all plastic packaging without exception."

An application to know where to throw away your packaging

To find your way around, there are even applications that scan the products in order to know where to throw them.

"You can use Citeo's Sorting Guide app, which tells you the sorting instructions for your municipality," she explains on Europe 1. , when you go on vacation or when you go to see friends, not to find your way around the colors of the bins which can be different in the cities", adds Stéphanie Foucart.

In 2023, a single simple rule will apply for all territories: the packaging will go into the sorting bin.
