They can contract their leg muscles to press the pedals up to 10 times per second.

Drum players, and particularly those of metal bands, are of interest to researchers at the University of Nantes.

A scientific study by the Motricity, Interactions, Performance laboratory is trying to understand the mechanisms that come into play in this frenetic movement called "ankle technique", and its consequences on the body, in particular in the possible development of joint problems.

“The laboratory is currently looking for partners to finance its research project”, indicates the Nantes University website, which presents this strange approach.

Two professional drummers, on which several sensors have been placed, have already been closely observed by these researchers.

The activation of their muscles, in particular of the lower limbs, but also of the hips and the back, have been studied.

And the first results show that from one beater to another, and even from one leg to another, the movement strategies differ.

Musculoskeletal problems

“We want to set up a project on a larger scale to better understand these mechanisms,” says Aurélie Sarcher, research engineer at the laboratory, in an explanatory video.

"The aim is to publish recommendations, for example on certain battery settings, such as seat height, which could have a significant effect on the development of musculoskeletal disorders", she also explains.
