The investigation continues into the disappearance of Maddie in Portugal in 2007. German police announced on Wednesday that they are investigating a new suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, 3 years old.

"The Brunswick Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating a 43-year-old German citizen on suspicion of murder," the federal police said in a statement.

A call for witnesses has also been launched.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from her room on May 3, 2007, a few days before her fourth birthday, in the small seaside resort of Praia da Luz, in southern Portugal, where she was staying on vacation with her family.

After fourteen months of controversial investigations, marked in particular by the indictment of the girl's parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, then by the dismissal of the inspector in charge of the investigation, the Portuguese police closed the case in 2008 before reopening the file five years later.
