The population registered in

Spain

in 2021, the second year of the pandemic, reached 47,435,587 registered, which represents an annual increase of 50,490 people, although this growth was due to the increase in foreigners because the number of registered Spaniards was reduced in 21,920 citizens.

These are statistics provided this Thursday by the

National Institute of Statistics

(INE) that include the progress of the continuous census as of January 1, 2022, which confirms the decrease in the Spanish population that began in 2020 with the pandemic, which continues below the 42 million, while foreigners exceed 5.5 million.

The drop in the net number of Spaniards is estimated at 0.1%, while the increase of 72,410 registered foreigners represents an increase of 1.3%;

Of all of them, those belonging to the EU grew by 13,400 (0.8%) and non-EU citizens, by 59,010 people, which represents 1.5% more.

In the last year, the registered population increased in nine autonomous communities and decreased in eight, with the largest increases in

the Valencian Community

(32,701 more people),

Andalusia

(21,748 more) and

Catalonia

(19,940 more).
