The smartphone, a state-of-the-art $2,000 iPhone, was negligently placed near the cash register.

Wednesday evening, around 11:30 p.m., the customer of a pizzeria in the center of Toulouse did not resist the temptation.

He stole the smartphone before rushing out of the establishment.

Except the device wasn't unattended.

Not at all, since he was connected via Bluetooth to the manager's earphones wandering around the room.

The latter was not in a telephone conversation but he heard the disconnection beep from his iPhone which was taking off.

A waiter immediately made the connection with the hurried customer, who was caught by staff as he fled.

The 48-year-old man, already known to the police, was handed over to a patrol.

His custody was lifted on Thursday morning.

He will be reconvened and be the subject of a penal order.
