Every week, transactions worth SEK 20 billion are made with debit cards.
But if all digital payments in Sweden are knocked out by a hacker attack, cash remains as the only means of payment.
According to the Riksbank's head of department, Christina Wejshammar, there is a large cash stockpile that can be used in such a crisis situation, and it is rather distribution that can be a problem.
- You do not have to worry about our stock running out, the problem is to get it out in the community and have a capacity for us all to suddenly use cash instead of our cards, says Christina Wejshammar, head of department at the Riksbank.
MSB: Have 2000 in cash at home
If Sweden should actually end up in a situation where parts of the banking system are eliminated, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) recommends that you have at least SEK 2,000 in cash at home.
- Preferably in different denominations.
It may be that there is no gear either, so you do not have to pay SEK 500 for a liter of milk, says MSB's CEO Camilla Asp.
