The badly injured reindeer dragged itself across the ground when it was discovered by passers-by last week.

They contacted the Sami village who were forced to kill the wire directly as it caused both severe internal and external damage.

There were also snowmobile tracks on the site, which according to the Sami village go to one of the nearby villages.

They suspect that someone has run on it on purpose.

- It is terrible and I have reported the incident as hate crime, infection, animal cruelty and violations of the reindeer husbandry law, says Sami village chairman Birgitta Engrund Sohlberg.

Increased agitation against reindeer

She says that situations like this have happened before in the same area, but then they did not report the incident to the police.

- Around the sports holiday, a reindeer was driven out on a bog and tormented by a scooter.

But then it was interrupted for some reason we do not know, says reindeer herder Tommy Vitblom.

The Sami village sees an increased incitement against reindeer and reindeer herders.

Often on social media but then it continues in reality out in the woods.

- I see that the hatred of the reindeer is growing all the time, I have noticed a lot in recent years, says Tommy Vitblom.

Matti Blind Berg, chairman of the Swedish Sami National Association, is saddened when he sees the pictures.

But he is not surprised.

SSR: The government must put its foot down

- It is a consequence of the hardened debate climate in Norrbotten.

In the end, someone goes from word to deed, he says.

He continues:

- The government must show that they take this seriously and take into account reindeer husbandry and unrest.

You have to get to grips with this issue and put your foot down.
