A resident of Girona (Spain) was recently fined 100 euros for “unnecessary sound at an inappropriate time”.

She had left her alarm clock on for two days, causing noise pollution for her neighbors, reports the

After two days, the residents ended up calling the municipal police.

On the spot, the agents noticed that the house from which the noise came was not inhabited at that time.

They also discovered the cause of the uproar: an alarm clock in motion.

Exasperated, the neighbors filed a complaint.

Legal provisions

The incriminated resident was contacted by the police and notified of her fine.

In Girona, since February 2013, a municipal ordinance provides that it is forbidden to generate unnecessary noise likely to disturb between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.

The operation of noisy household appliances at these times is therefore prohibited.

In France, article R1336-5 of the Public Health Code specifies that "no particular noise must, by its duration, its repetition or its intensity, affect the tranquility of the neighborhood or the health of man, in a public or private place".

In the event of an infringement, a fixed fine of 68 euros may be imposed on the author of the disturbance.
