Due to the war in Ukraine, the cruise ships do not stop in Russian St. Petersburg. Instead, passengers get to spend a few extra nights in Stockholm - and that provides increased revenue for tourism in the capital. - It is of course very important for the entire hospitality industry that we now get a boost again after the tough years that have been, says Stefan Scheja, marketing manager for ferries and cruise traffic at Stockholm ports.
Before the pandemic, approximately twelve million passengers came to Stockholm every year, by ferry and cruise.
It generated seven billion kronor in tourism revenue.
During the pandemic years 2020 and 2021, the number of boat-borne passengers decreased to approximately four million per year, which has led to the tourism industry losing 4.7 billion in revenue.
