The situation in Jerusalem worries the planet.

The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors on Tuesday morning to discuss escalating Israeli-Palestinian tensions, diplomatic sources said on Monday.

France, Ireland, China, Norway and the United Arab Emirates have requested this meeting.

A new wave of violence left more than 20 people injured on Sunday in and around the esplanade of the Mosques in Jerusalem, two days after clashes that left more than 150 injured.

Early on Sunday, hundreds of Palestinian protesters began heaping stones on the plaza shortly before religious Jews arrived at the spot, considered Judaism's holiest and Islam's third holiest site, police say. Israeli.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported 19 Palestinian injuries, some of whom were hit by rubber bullets.

Since the capture in 1967 and then the annexation by Israel of East Jerusalem, Jews have been authorized to access the esplanade at certain times, but not to pray there.

The prayer normally takes place at the Wailing Wall, below, even if for years religious Jews have been praying in secret on the esplanade.

Jordan, which administers the esplanade of the Mosques, blamed Israel for this new escalation of violence on Sunday, with King Abdallah II calling on the Jewish state to "end the illegal and provocative measures that lead to a greater great escalation.
