A Russian man and a Ukrainian woman who fled the Ukrainian war together are officially married at the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to Mexican media such as Telemundo on the 17th (local time), Daria Sakniuk, a Ukrainian woman, and Semen Bovrovsky, a Russian man, got married on the 13th in Tijuana, a city on the northern border of Mexico.

The wedding was held in an unfamiliar foreign country without family or friends, but the couple holding the marriage certificate in their hands said, "I'm happy" and laughed out loud.

According to Mexican media, the couple had been dating for three and a half years and lived together in Kiiu, Ukraine until recently.

The wedding was supposed to be held in Ukraine, but they escaped together to the United States when the situation worsened after the unexpected Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.

After a long six-day journey through several cities, they arrived in Tijuana, a Mexican border town two weeks ago, but it was impossible for the two of them to cross the US border together.

After the war, the US government grants humanitarian entry permits to Ukrainian refugees, but Russians are not entitled to the same benefits.

Russians needed a family in the United States to be able to enter the United States and apply for asylum.

In the end, the couple decided to get married in Mexico, and with the help of the Tijuana local government and migrant support groups, they were able to become an official couple by securing the necessary documents for marriage registration.

The groom, Bovrovski, told Mexican media that "two months ago, we didn't think we would leave Ukraine, and we're here."
