The weekend was particularly tense in Laval, capital of the Mayenne department.

For two consecutive nights, Saturday evening then Sunday evening, violence broke out in the Saint-Nicolas-Kellermann district, to the east of the city.

More than a dozen vehicles were set on fire and damaged, including cars belonging to the municipality.

Containers were also burned, while billboards were smashed.

Clashes also took place with the police who had intervened to calm the perpetrators, presumably residing in the neighborhood.

An original arrest

The young mayor of Laval, Florian Bercault (PS), condemned these “destructive acts of vandalism” and gave his “full support to the victims, to the inhabitants of the district, but also to the police and the firefighters who acted in the night ".

According to the Mayenne prefecture, the violence was the result of the arrest of an 18-year-old young man in the Saint-Nicolas district.
