These patients who died in hospital suffered from other pathologies, such as acute coronary syndrome, severe hypertension, diabetes or cancer, making them ineligible for vaccines.

This announcement comes as the authorities have just relaunched calls for vaccination.

Just under 40% of Shanghainese over the age of 60 have already received a third dose of one of the two inactivated Chinese vaccines distributed to the population.

“Sealed” areas subject to daily PCR testing

Three deaths out of 372,000 cases of Covid-19 infections have been reported since March 1, the vast majority of which are asymptomatic cases.

Despite the slight decline in the number of new cases, the 25 million inhabitants remain subject to a strict lockdown in the Chinese economic capital.

A senior health affairs official said on Monday that people living in so-called “sealed” areas where one or more infections have been detected in the past seven days will be required to take daily PCR tests.

More than 200 million tests have been carried out since March 10.
