In 2021, just over 180,000 Americans chose to move from California, which may not sound like much in relation to the state's total population of 39 million.

But the decline is still historic - and looks set to continue this year as well.

The reason is considered, among other things, high taxes and climate impact.

- But perhaps the most decisive factor is the sky-high housing prices, says SVT's US correspondent Stefan Åsberg.

Strict restrictions

Another reason is believed to be strict pandemic restrictions.

- I think some people think that California has too strict covid restrictions, especially here in Los Angeles, says broker Denise Marks.
