North Korea conducts missile test to test 'tactical nuclear weapons'

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the launch of a new type of tactical guided weapon aimed at boosting the country's nuclear capabilities, the North's Korean Central News Agency said today.

The South Korean military said today that it detected late Saturday evening two projectiles fired from the east coast of North Korea towards the sea, flying 110 kilometers with a peak altitude of 25 kilometers and a maximum speed of less than Mach 4.

"The new type of tactical guided weapon system is of great significance in improving the firepower of long-range artillery units on the front lines, and enhancing the efficiency in operating tactical nuclear bombs," the North's official Korean Central News Agency said.

The test coincides with joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.

According to Agence France-Presse, analysts say the launch likely came to coincide with the birthday of North Korea's founder, Kim Il Sung, on Friday.
