DUOS AND DUELS AT THE ÉLYSÉE - In the “Inseparable” story podcast, Catherine Nay, political journalist for Europe 1, describes through anecdotes the relationship of couples who have marked the History of the Fifth Republic.

Couples in the first sense of the term, united by marriage… But also power duos like that of Charles de Gaulle and Pompidou, linked by an extraordinary pact of trust.

PODCAST

Charles de Gaulle and Georges Pompidou is the story of a political duo with an exceptional understanding.

But how did the paths of a general hero of the Resistance and a Latin-Greek professor cross?

In the "Inseparable" podcast produced by Europe 1 Studio, the journalist and great voice of Europe 1 Catherine Nay recounts the meeting between De Gaulle and Pompidou, two extraordinary characters intimately linked for no less than twenty-four years.

It all started on August 26, 1944. After four years of occupation, Paris celebrated the Liberation.

On the Champs-Elysées, the whole city is gathered.

Among the crowd cheering General de Gaulle was a young Greek and Latin teacher from the Lycée Henri IV, a certain Georges Pompidou.

This is the first time he has seen General de Gaulle in person.

Catherine Nay says that with his large size and his small head, this man with a “disproportionate” silhouette seems to Pompidou straight out of another world.

But none the less impressive!

Savior of France, de Gaulle was elected head of the provisional government, and as the crowd in attendance attests, the whole country is behind him.

If there is a man who has all the keys for the reconstruction of the country, it is him, and Georges Pompidou is well aware of that.

The professor himself does not lack ambition, and from that day on, he will do everything to enter General de Gaulle's cabinet...

Easier said than done, however, because Georges Pompidou does not have the slightest title of resistance!

He then called on his friend René Brouillet, already established in De Gaulle's entourage since the Second World War.

"I'm not in Engineering, but if you need me, I'm here," he wrote to her in a letter.

And luckily, his entrance ticket does not take long to arrive.

René Brouillet and the rest of de Gaulle's cabinet realize that they lack a small hand to write daily political notes, but also a specialist in National Education.

Who better than a teacher to fulfill these functions?
