Ashraf Elected Speaker of Pakistan National Assembly

Xinhua News Agency, Islamabad, April 16 (Reporter Jiang Chao) Pakistan's National Assembly (lower house of parliament) elected Raja Pervaiz Ashraf as the new speaker on the 16th, replacing Assad Kaiser who announced his resignation a few days ago .

Ashraf is a member of the National Assembly from the Pakistan People's Party.

On the same day, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, a member of the Muslim League (Sharif) who presided over the National Assembly meeting, announced that the only candidate, Ashraf, was elected as the new speaker without voting and counting.

Shortly before the meeting that day, the deputy speaker of the National Assembly from the Justice Movement Party, Kasim Suri, announced his resignation as deputy speaker.

Kaiser from the Justice Movement Party was elected Speaker in August 2018.

On the 9th of this month, due to his unwillingness to preside over the National Assembly's vote of no-confidence motion against then-Prime Minister Imran Khan from the same party, Kaiser announced his resignation as Speaker before the vote that night began, and MP Sadiq presided over the vote.

Pakistan's National Assembly passed a motion of no-confidence against Imran Khan in the early hours of the 10th, followed by a prime minister election on the 11th, and Shabazz Sharif, chairman of the Muslim League (Sharif), was elected as the new prime minister.

Ashraf was born in 1950 and served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from June 2012 to March 2013.
