  • Covid An indefinite confinement in Shanghai watched by drones: "Control your soul's desire for freedom"

The inhabitants of

Shanghai

, the Chinese city confined by an outbreak of Covid, faced police who asked them to give up their apartments to confine patients infected with coronavirus, as can be seen in several videos that proliferate on social networks.

They show an unusual resistance of Chinese citizens to authority in the face of the government's rigid response.

Shanghai, a city with 25 million inhabitants and one of China's economic engines, is the center of a new Covid outbreak that defies the strict "zero covid" policy promoted by the authorities.

Residents,

confined since early April,

have complained about a

lack of food

and excessive zeal by authorities in enforcing quarantines.

At the same time, the authorities are seeking to obtain thousands of beds to house Covid-19 patients at a time when the city registers nearly

20,000 new cases daily.

On Thursday night, several videos circulating on social media showed residents outside their homes yelling at officers wearing protective suits with the word "police" on them.

In one of the videos, the police apparently make several arrests, while residents accuse the security forces of "beating up people."

The incident occurred when the authorities

ordered 39 people to make their homes available

"in response to the needs of prevention and control of the epidemic", and to house patients affected by the virus in their apartments, according to Zhangjiang Group, promoter of the Housing complex.
