The alarm about the oil spill came at 21 o'clock on Wednesday evening and the Coast Guard together with the Sea Rescue Society was out all Maundy Thursday to try to get as much oil as possible from the sea, from Fotö in the south to Rörö in the north.

- We do not have an overall picture of how much oil has leaked, says Valdemar Lindekrantz, press spokesperson at the Coast Guard.

The spill occurred in connection with a ship being refueled west of the island of Vrångö, and the Coast Guard had, after just over a day's work, recovered about 600 liters of oil.

- It is thick, sticky oil, we do not want it in the sea or on our beaches.

It is dangerous to health, says Valdemar Lindekrantz.

Police helicopter connects

The spill is said to be an accident.

The Coast Guard initially initiated a preliminary investigation, but it was then dropped because no criminal negligence could be proven.

The Coast Guard is now working to get the oil out of the sea, at the same time as the rescue service Öckerö collects what has floated ashore, mainly on the west side of Öckerö.

- We have enlisted the help of the Sea Rescue Society, which is out with several boats, and later a police helicopter will also come to help search, says Valdemar Lindekrantz.

There is still no forecast of when the decontamination will be completed.
