In the Gaza Strip, which has an area of 360 square kilometers, two million and 300 thousand citizens live, one and a half million of whom live below the poverty line, as a result of the repercussions of the Israeli siege imposed since the summer of 2006, and what resulted from the military wars waged by the occupation over the past years. Complicated their daily lives, and deprived them of a decent life like other inhabitants of the earth.

In light of these harsh humanitarian scenes, and the increasing needs of families during the holy month of Ramadan, to provide what they need, the residents of the besieged Gaza did not find an alternative but to provide themselves with relief. Citizens of Gaza individually launched several humanitarian campaigns, based on cooking meals inside their homes, It is offered fresh and free of charge to poor and needy families, throughout the days of the fasting month.

"The Predominant Cook"

In Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, with the time of the afternoon call to prayer, the citizen, Walid Al-Hattab, places large metal bowls in front of his house on stoves that he lit from the wood, filling them with meat and roasted wheat grains. Abu Youssef, which all residents of the neighborhood used to eat for free during the holy month.

Walid Al-Hattab, aged 57, cooks “Jerisha” soup for the poor of Gaza for free in Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood, during the holy month of Ramadan, for the sixth year in a row, in addition to Thursday and Friday of every week for the rest of the year, until the residents called him “ The Ghalaba cook,” referring to the effort he makes over the past years to provide meals to poor families at his own expense, and cook their favorite soup on the breakfast table.

While he was waiting for the cereal to be ready to be distributed to the residents in front of his house as well, Al-Hattab told "Emirates Today" that "the food of the cereal goes back to the era of our master Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and it was inherited by previous generations of parents and grandparents, and it has a prominent place in the Palestinian heritage, In order to preserve it from extinction, since 2017, I have been preparing it and providing it for free to families, and to everyone who likes to eat this meal.”

He added, "Since the first day of cooking groats, I witnessed the huge demand for eating it, as I used to cook about five kilograms of roasted wheat, but today I use 25 kilograms daily, and I provide food to hundreds of families throughout the days of the fasting month, in addition to delivering meals to the elderly home."

The “Ghalaba cook” indicates that his sons and daughters participate with him in preparing the “Greisha” meal, three of whom are tasked with cooking “Greisha” and distributing it to the poor and willing residents of the neighborhood, while his two daughters are busy inside the house cleaning wheat grains from impurities.

Al-Hattab affirms that he will not stop the continuity of his personal charitable initiative to alleviate the suffering of poor and needy families, by providing a meal of Jereesh that helps them feed their children during the month of Ramadan, when the needs of each family abound, adding, “The residents here are accustomed to eating Jereesh.” Which I prepare daily in Ramadan, I cannot stop doing good in the hope of getting reward.”

Tkiyet Farag Allah

Similar to the “Ibrahimian Hospital” in the city of Hebron in the southern West Bank, which provides fresh meals daily to all the poor throughout the year, the citizen, Khader Faraj Allah, provides fresh breakfast food daily to hundreds of poor people in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, which contains meat Lamb, bean sprouts, and tomato juice.

Faraj Allah paved this path of goodness in 2017, when he began to cook beans inside his house at his own expense, and present them to dozens of poor families near his home and his residential area, throughout the days of Ramadan.

In light of the success of this individual initiative, its scope has expanded over the past years. A group of volunteers are currently participating with him by self-efforts, who prepare breakfast meals, and then go to the homes of hundreds in the Nuseirat camp, to distribute them hot, shortly before the time of the Maghrib call to prayer.

Faraj Allah says that “the idea of the initiative to provide free food to the families of the Gaza Strip is a step on the path of goodness and giving, which the Tekke Hebron City has offered to the poor since 1927, which was established during the era of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, and with the exacerbation of the suffering of the population over the past years, I walked the path of establishing Hospice for the poor of Gaza, where I personally rushed to help dozens of families with everything I could.”

He added, "After the initiative succeeded in achieving the principles of social solidarity, I was able, with the help of many volunteers, to establish Tkiyet Faraj Allah inside the Nuseirat camp, in which thousands of Palestinian refugees live, under harsh living conditions, to help them provide breakfast food for their children throughout the days of the fasting month, Hoping that the doors of the hospice will remain open daily in front of the poor and needy throughout the year.”

Faraj Allah explains that the main goal of establishing a hospice for the poor in Gaza is to spread the idea of solidarity, and to help the population to face the waves of deteriorating living conditions, and alleviate their suffering, in light of the unprecedented spread of poverty and unemployment rates among the besieged Gazans.

A family cooks for 1000 families

Moving to the Al-Salam neighborhood in Rafah, in the far south of the Gaza Strip, for the fifth year in a row, the citizen Omar Abu Hussein, his wife and their children share in preparing large quantities of food inside their home, and distributing it to families living in permanent poverty and destitution.

(Abu Hussein), who is 50 years old, had previously taken the initiative to provide food to the poor in the area in which he lives, and due to the effectiveness of his personal initiative in fighting poverty, he received many donations from philanthropists, until he was able to establish the “Relief Kitchen for the Poor of Gaza” project inside his home , which serves breakfast daily to more than 1,000 families in the city of Rafah.
