Three men appeared this Friday in Lyon before the Assize Court for minors, for having tortured and killed Ahmed Kourak, in the district of Croix-Rousse (Lyon 4) in March 2019. Two of them were sentenced to 20 years of criminal imprisonment.

The third, minor at the time of the facts, 13 years old, less than 30 years old for all three required by the Advocate General.

The court did not take into account the acts of torture and barbarity committed by the defendants, but judged them for aggravated murder and violence.

The verdict, which required five hours of deliberation, also retained the "minority excuse" for the youngest of them.

The video of the acts of torture circulated on social networks

The body of Ahmed Kourak, a 28-year-old Algerian fisherman who had applied for regularization in France, was discovered bound hand and foot, mutilated by around sixty stab wounds, in March 2019 in an apartment in the Croix Rousse.

He had been kidnapped and tortured by three Algerian migrants.

The macabre discovery came after an acquaintance of the victim reported to the police a video circulating on social networks, showing the victim being tortured by young people, with his face uncovered.

A friend of Ahmed Kourak, also kidnapped and beaten, had managed to escape.

"It's a trial of barbarians," said Me Jean-Baudouin Shibaba, lawyer for the victim's family, this Monday before the start of the closed-door hearing.
