The video of an altercation between a man and two young girls, one of whom is wearing a veil, was broadcast earlier this week on social networks.

The sequence, filmed in Montpellier (Hérault), has been shared many times by Internet users, some evoking an Islamophobic attack.

The mayor, Michaël Delafosse (PS) condemned "with the greatest firmness the aggression of these two young girls".

According to prosecutor Fabrice Bélargent, the two young girls, minors, presented themselves to the police station the same evening, "as being the victims of this attack and specified that they had been the subject of racist insults".

The next day, the man presented himself to the police, “indicating that he had been the subject of homophobic violence and insults from two young women”.

The man prosecuted for violence and insults

The man "declared himself in danger, elements allowing him to be identified being broadcast on social networks since the day before".

He was taken into custody.

The prosecution indicated on Friday that it had instituted proceedings against the latter, for willful violence and insults, committed because of belonging to a religion.

In addition, an investigation was opened to identify the people who broadcast the recording of the images, as well as those who posted “on social networks writings or images likely to constitute the offense of harassment of a person”.
