After the sinking of a Russian warship, strong explosions were heard in Kyiv

Loud explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early this morning and air raid sirens sounded across the country as residents prepared for new Russian attacks after the main Russian warship sank in the Black Sea following a fire.

According to agencies, the explosions heard were among the most violent in the Ukrainian capital since the withdrawal of Russian forces earlier this month in preparation for battles in the south and east.

Ukraine has claimed responsibility for the sinking of the Moskva, saying that the main Russian ship in the Black Sea dating back to the Soviet era was hit by one of its missiles.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the ship sank late Thursday evening while towing to port.

The ministry stated that more than 500 crew members of the missile cruiser were evacuated after an explosion of ammunition on board, without admitting that it had been attacked.

Ukraine says it hit the warship with a locally made Neptune anti-ship missile.
