Since Monday, activists from the “Last Generation” have been blocking streets and important traffic junctions in Frankfurt.

Especially during rush hour, the radical climate protectors occupy federal roads, motorways, bridges and intersections to demonstrate against the climate policy of the federal government and against investments in fossil infrastructure projects.

According to the police, most of the participants are not from the region, but have traveled to Frankfurt from outside to take part in the blockades.

A total of around 20 blockade actions have been counted since Monday.

Around 70 activists stuck themselves to the roadways, and an oily liquid was poured out several times.

Some planned blockades could be prevented.

The Frankfurt police have increased the number of patrols in the city to track down suspicious groups.

Fake oil spilled

On Thursday morning, there was an accident at a blockade where the activists had spilled “fake oil” on a Main bridge: four cyclists fell when they drove over the liquid, in some cases injuring themselves.

The “Last Generation” apologized for this on the social network Twitter.

At the blockade point, it had not been possible to free the road from the liquid by Thursday afternoon, which restricted traffic.

Now it is to be examined whether the activists can be forced to bear the costs that arise in connection with their actions.

Around 140 investigations against those involved in the blockades, such as coercion, dangerous intervention in road traffic, bodily harm and property damage, have been recorded since the actions began on Monday.

Nearly 200 people were arrested during the protests.

Among them were some who were involved in the blockades for several days.

Over 30 people were taken into long-term detention to prevent them from taking part in protests again.

Some must remain in custody until Easter Monday.
