Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who has been on the EU sanctions list since April 9 due to Russia's war against Ukraine, has, according to sources to SVT, continued influence over the companies that own the aluminum smelter Kubal in Sundsvall, EN + and Rusal.

"Does not include Deripaska personally"

Despite this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government do not believe that there is reason to issue sanctions against Kubal.

In an email to SVT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that Deripaska's personal influence is not large enough:

"EU sanctions include Deripaska personally.

According to information from the company, Deripaska has had minority ownership in both the ultimate owner company EN + and the direct parent company Rusal since 2018.

For Sweden, it is of the utmost importance that the sanctions are complied with.

The government is following the issue very closely. "

SVT's request has not been complied with

SVT has for several days called for an opportunity to ask questions to a suitable person, proposed by Foreign Minister Ann Linde, regarding the view of Deripaska's role in the context.

We also want to know what is meant by the e-mail response with the wording: "of the utmost importance that the sanctions are complied with".

Our request has so far not been complied with.

SVT has previously revealed that the Swedish government on an earlier occasion in a lobbying work against the United States managed to avert the sanctions against Kubal that were then relevant.
