According to the latest report from UN climate experts (IPCC) published last week, the world has three years to cap greenhouse gas emissions and hope for a "livable" future, starting with detoxification of energies. fossils, the main causes of global warming.

In the light of this warning, and of the war in Ukraine which highlights this dependence on fossil fuels, governments must "urgently set national targets on renewables, binding targets and subject to national monitoring mechanisms and international", demanded Thursday in a press release the experts in renewables from REN21 and the hundreds of NGOs from CAN.

"State commitments have become empty promises leading to a cascade of disasters. Voluntary contributions have failed to protect people and the planet", commented Tasneem Essop, executive director of CAN, describing renewables as "the only efficient and cost-effective solution to our dependence on fossil fuels".

As part of the Paris agreement, which aims to limit global warming to well below +2°C compared to the pre-industrial era, if possible +1.5°C, each country has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.

But according to the IPCC, even if the commitments for 2030 were respected, warming could reach +2.8°C, further multiplying disasters.

And they are not.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres recently denounced the "empty promises" of certain governments that he accused of lying.

“We call for legally binding renewable energy targets creating a system where there is accountability at all levels of decision-making,” insisted Rana Adib, executive director of REN21, regretting the fact that fossil fuels still represented in 2019 more than 80% of total global energy consumption.

Renewables, notably solar and wind, have increased significantly in recent years, but mainly in the production of electricity.
