The municipality of Ängelholm has applied for a permit to extract 75,000 cubic meters of sand from Skälderviken and to carry out a so-called beach claim along the beaches in Ängelholm to protect buildings in extreme weather.

It is about carrying out a sand extraction at one time during a ten-year period.

That application is rejected by the Land and Environmental Court.

The ruling states that it would have an excessive impact on animals and that the sandy bottom could be damaged.

The lawyer Marcus Berg represents the municipality - hear him comment on the verdict in the clip above.

Nature reserve

The sand recycling would take place in the area by Havsbaden and Vejbystrand in close proximity to nature conservation areas belonging to Natura 2000.

Both Höganäs municipality and the environmental committee in Helsingborg have been against the plans because they believe that the beach requirement is not compatible with the conservation objectives for Natura 2000.

The County Administrative Board in Skåne has also been against the plans.

Already applied in 2016

Already in 2016, an application was received for beach feeding and sand reclamation and the lawyer Magnus Berg is critical of the fact that they took so long to investigate.

- It is unfortunate because when it takes so long, there will be time for new laws that change the directives for when we submitted the application, says Magnus Berg, lawyer.

However, the court approves permission to perform local sand reclamation.

That decision was granted as early as 2019 by the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU).

SVT Nyheter Helsingborg has sought representatives from Ängelholm municipality.
