The lockdowns in China and the closure of airspace due to the war in Ukraine led to a drop in cargo volume at Frankfurt Airport in March.

The volume of cargo handled decreased by 13.1 percent to 181,214 tons compared to March of the previous year.

Compared to the last pre-crisis March in 2019, this means a decline of 10.5 percent.

Most recently, the volume of freight in Frankfurt even significantly exceeded the pre-crisis level of 2019.

Meanwhile, airport operator Fraport counted 2.9 million passengers in Frankfurt in March.

Compared to the last pre-crisis March (2019), this is around half (minus 47.4 percent) of the volume at that time.

Compared to March of the first year of the crisis, 2020, which was characterized by massive travel restrictions, this corresponds to an increase of 217.9 percent.

As far as passenger numbers are concerned, Frankfurt was already able to benefit in March from a renewed increase in demand, especially for European and non-European holiday destinations, as it was also said on Wednesday.

Taking the first three months of the year together, the number of passengers in Frankfurt was around 7.3 million, a little more than half the first quarter of the pre-crisis year 2019 and around 192 percent above the first quarter of 2021.

The positive development in passenger numbers also continued at the international airport holdings.

The increases were sometimes more than one hundred percent above the comparative figures for March 2021, it said on Wednesday.
