What did you feel the first time you came across this text?

It was difficult.

I read it 4 years ago, before the pandemic.

I don't know why I'm getting involved in more and more complex projects. It reminds me of 15 years ago, when I started doing theater, that I was very reluctant because I had the technique made for the camera.

And I was very envious of all the theater actors, when I went to see them and they had a good time.

But I always had an excuse not to get into it back then.

Until Gonzalo Suárez came to me, who was doing his first play, 'Arsenic for Compassion' and he wanted me to be Mortimer.

There I no longer had any excuse and I couldn't say no.


What is 'The Prize'?

It is a very enjoyable comedy to do.


Please explain.


It is a comedy, but really, from which the character suffers and the public enjoys it.

My goal was to resemble, saving distances, the Jack Lemmond of 'The apartment', that the man is having a terrible time and is catching pneumonia in his pajamas while he leaves his apartment to his boss and he is with the woman he loves.


Is it a play about everyone having a price, like 'An Indecent Proposal'?


Well, it had been invented before, with Groucho Marx: "These are my principles and if you don't like them, I have others."

But in summary: About a very simple skeleton of a triangle of two empowered women with a man who wants to be happy and they won't let him talk about several things, beyond how far you would sell yourself: The pufo of the awards literary, a writer who can't write and uses a 'black', how talent is unlocked, how you use other people's talent to make it your own.


How do you understand his job?


The actor is a catalyst that makes the viewer go to his life and his world and his miseries, which are neither yours nor those of the character.

It is seen a lot in cinema: The cinematographic technique what he really tells is not the story he is talking about, but the one he is listening to.

The reverse shot is always the one that gives the viewer what he has to think.


How would you say the pandemic has affected his union?


I think people have somehow rediscovered us in show business, they've come back to understand why we're there.

The comedians, even in the little theater that there was during the pandemic, we were the only ones who continued to give an aura of naturalness, because we were the only ones who were without a mask.

On stage, people saw what the world was like before, without a mask.


Anything else?

As comedians and as filmmakers or as musicians, we have returned to the origins: with a good idea, two wires and a stick we can do a gag, something silly, we are going to entertain people.

We have capsized.

We have ceased to be those 'of the eyebrows' and those of 'no to war', the politicized puppeteers.

And now we are there so that the shits of life fit a little better for people.


Also, in this country, precisely.

We have a very characteristic humor.

Cinema and theater are always in crisis, because they have to be in crisis, but we will never be short of work, because Spain is a country where what we like most is to be told a joke and to be told well.


Did you learn anything from the pandemic?

15 years ago I left the center of Madrid for the Sierra de Guadarrama.

I was very lucky, I built my own house and today I live in the fucking 'Capitol', with my children, my dogs, my animals.

I have the house paid for and I'm not in a hurry.

I can live with very little.

It is one of the things that the pandemic has taught us.

There are things that are replaceable and very few essential things.

You don't need too much, neither clothes nor other things, but you do need to read a book.

On the other hand, all my life I have been adapting to changes.

My life has been going from here to there, without stopping, since I was 9 years old.

When I was 12 years old, I went to a film festival in the Philippines, I stayed there for a year and I came back knowing English.

And knowing how to adapt to changes is what I think is cracking in society,

At a time when economic values ​​and powers are changing, the whole world is being shaken.

It is a time of change and it is being seen that those who do not know how to adapt are staying in the gutter.

Look at the panorama: there is uncertainty, social unrest, people are very tense...


Optimistic or pessimistic?

I'm pessimistic-optimistic: I'm sure we're going to fuck each other up the ass.

I hope it's as fast as possible.

But I already enjoy the day to day and I have a great time living as a child.

I live with little, I repeat to myself, and I think I have achieved happiness.


I see him very zen.

Let's see... I've burned down entire buildings.

Has having a health scare (a heart attack in 2014) helped you to be calmer now?

Before I had it, a son of mine [Merlin, suffering from cystic fibrosis] had it, which really puts your feet on the ground.

That I had it is normal.

In fact, it's the healthiest thing that's ever happened to me.


Do you miss partying?

Noooo.

If she stopped sitting well with me a long time ago.

Moderation has not been a premise in my life.

But hey, I don't take it off in the slightest.

I am where I am thanks to the life I have led and the friends I have had.


You have always laughed at his ups and downs in popularity.

For me, fame is a blessing: being able to go through life being a character like Jorge Sanz, that people greet him, seems great to me.

I took fame well, yes.

It seems like a fucking mother to me, going through life entertaining others and that people like what I do.


So it's not so ups and downs.

There comes a time when you realize that this is part of the natural evolution of fame.

The true success is not to achieve fame, but to maintain yourself over time.

It was already defined by Fernán Gómez, who said that fame in this country only lasts five years and it's true.

And he added that we are a country accustomed to living in a ministry.

In other words, you can highlight a season, but don't highlight too much either: You here, with everyone.

But the one who best defined it was Serrat, who said that fame is circular: you do 'Mediterráneo' and you're the host and everyone with 'Mediterráneo' until there comes a time when you're fed up with the song and somehow you reject it: Heavy.
