The course of events began with the police stopping Patrick Lyoya's car due to a suspected crime linked to the car's registration.

The situation degenerated when Lyoya started running away from the police, after which they both started wrestling.

During the riot, they are both said to have fought for control of the police electric gun.

In the 20-minute video, filmed by Lyoya's fellow passengers and shown at a press conference on Wednesday, the police are heard urging Lyoya to let go of the electric pistol.

The police end up on top of Lyoya, who in turn lies face down on the ground.

The police then draw their service weapon and shoot at a short distance towards Lyoya's neck.

Reinforcement arrived a number of minutes after the shot.

No weapon should then have been found on Lyoya's body.

The family: An execution

The event has received a lot of attention in the US and on Wednesday, about a hundred people had gathered outside the town hall in Grand Rapids, chanting "black lives matter".

Protesters have previously demanded that the film be shown to the public.

Lyoya's family has described the shooting as an execution.

"We are once again reminded of how quickly an interaction with the police can be fatal for black men in America and how far we must go to change that," says civil law lawyer Benjamin Crump, who was hired by the family.

The police who fired the shot have been taken out of service during the investigation of the incident.

He is said to have worked as a police officer in the city since 2015. The police authority has not yet released his identity.

"I intend to remain straightforward and open during the ongoing investigation conducted by the Michigan Police," said Eric Winstrom, Grand Rapids Police Chief, at the news conference on Wednesday.

Two years ago the fall of George Floyd

In May 2020, George Floyd, a black man, died in a police intervention in Minnesota.

The event was the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, which in massive demonstrations around the world protested against racism and police violence against blacks.

Several similar incidents in which black people have been killed by police in the United States have occurred since then, often with major protests as a result.
