New York police have arrested a suspect in the shooting of a crowded subway train in Brooklyn and wounded several people, more than 24 hours after the horrific attack, US media reported Wednesday.

Police had named Frank James, 62, as a suspect in the attack.

And CNN reported that two policemen spotted him on a Manhattan street and he was taken into custody.

Officials are scheduled to hold a press briefing in this regard later Wednesday.

Police have been searching for more than 24 hours for Frank James, the suspect in the shooting of a subway in south Brooklyn, and US authorities have said the shooter will be prosecuted for a terrorist attack.


On Tuesday, a gunman threw a smoke bomb at a subway station in Brooklyn, New York, wearing a gas mask, before opening fire, wounding 23 people, including 10 with gunshot wounds.

"We were really lucky because it could have been worse," said New York Police Chief Kishant Sewell.

On Wednesday, New Yorkers received an "emergency" message on their phones asking them to provide any information useful to investigators.

She offered a reward of $50,000 in return.

The incident comes amid an escalation of shootings in New York over the past two years, and a high rate of violence, particularly in subway stations, according to American media.

NYPD data shows there have been 617 crime complaints so far this year on transportation, up 68% from last year.
