A 45-year-old man from Strasbourg drowned on Tuesday in Lacanau in Gironde.

It was surfers who brought him back to the beach around 7:30 p.m. after seeing him struggling in the water.

The victim in cardiopulmonary arrest could not be resuscitated by the surfers and then by the emergency services.

According to the first elements, it would have been caught in a baïne (a water hole which forms in the sand of the coast with the action of the North-South coastal current, the wind and the swell) off the station seaside at the height of the ebb tide.

He was bathing in a wetsuit while his companion was strolling on the beach during this time.

He was to return to eastern France on Wednesday.

An investigation has been opened by the Gironde gendarmerie.
