US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln said he had reliable information that Russian forces may have used chemical agents in the attack on the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.

In a meeting with reporters at the State Department, Secretary Blincol said he was "not in a position to confirm" some recent allegations that Russian forces used chemical weapons in Mariupol.

However, he said, "we have reliable information that the Russian military may have used various riot control agents, including tear gas mixed with chemical agents, as part of an attack to take control of Mariupol."

Secretary Blincoln did not, however, specifically state whether the chemical agents the Russian military may have used were at the level of weapons used in chemical warfare or merely for suppression of protests.

"We have shared that information with Ukraine," he said.
