Two years after Erdogan took office, Turkey was shaken by a coup attempt.

The attempt failed and Erdogan responded by arresting more than 120,000 citizens, most of whom are believed to have been opposition figures who were not involved in the coup.

Since then, Erdogan has strengthened his power and after he was re-elected in 2018, he has gained increased influence over the judiciary and got rid of the post of Prime Minister.

Now he has also tried to increase his influence abroad by mediating between Russia and Ukraine.
