• Report of 2021 USA denounces the "attack" on the press of the Spanish Government

Vox is cited six times and Podemos three times - plus a mention of former Vice President Pablo Iglesias - in the annual report on Human Rights of the

US Department of State

.

The two formations appear in the sections titled

Violence and Harassment against Freedom of Expression

, while Vox is also in the

Racial and Ethnic Violence and Discrimination

and

Abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity

sections .

This year's edition of the report, which was presented today in

Washington

by the Secretary of State, continues, although in a milder way, the criticisms against the Government included in the document last year.

On that occasion, the US State Department directly denounced the positions of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who had accused "the conservative press" of "shaking the waters" every time the Popular Party lost an election.

This time it is the turn of Pablo Iglesias who, in February 2021, when he was the second vice president of the Government, accused the media of being "a weapon of business power", according to the report.

The State Department also recalls that in May of last year the closing video of the United We Can campaign in the regional elections in Madrid was denounced by professional journalists' organizations as "intimidating."

In that filming, United We Can included images of relevant figures from the media, such as

Susanna Griso, Carlos Herrera

and

Vicente Vallés

, who, he said, "have already talked too much."

The report also states exhaustively that "there are numerous reports of high government officials and politicians harassing the media and specific journalists."

Stigmatize journalists

In this sense, the most criticized party is Vox.

The State Department collects the accusations of organizations such as

Reporters Without Borders

against the formation directed by Santiago Abascal for what these groups describe as "attempts to stigmatize journalists through

online

harassment and the prohibition of the media from attending their events , especially in the campaign events for the municipal elections on May 4 in Madrid".

The report also refers to "the rhetoric of Vox politicians against the media", which "sometimes incites violence against journalists".

Vox is also censored for its position on immigration.

The authors of the report include references to NGOs that have considered that "Vox has promoted and reinforced the rhetoric" against "immigrant minors who are accompanied by [adults]."

It also collects accusations against that party for its attitude against the

LBTQI + collective

.

In general, the vision of the situation in Spain regarding Human Rights and the Rule of Law that the report conveys is positive.

The State Department returns once again to collect the complaints of the Catalan independence supporters against the Government for the imprisonment of the leaders of the secessionist movement in that autonomous community, but concludes that in Spain, contrary to what these groups maintain, the different NGOs consulted agree that there are no political prisoners.

The report also includes some isolated cases of attacks on the Jewish community, and information on xenophobic actions that, it says, occur more frequently in the

Basque Country, Navarra

and

Ceuta

and

Melilla

.
