The galaxy of the Strasbourg cinema world has a new UFO, called the Cosmos.

The former Odyssée, which belongs to the city, has just been renamed by the new team in place, the Cosmos.

Closed since this weekend for renovations, the historic cinema operated for three decades by Les Rencontres Cographiques d'Alsace (RCA) is now taken over by the association Le Troisire Souffle, new holder for a period of five years of the public service delegation (DSP) of the municipal cinema.

Work to bring it up to standard has just started for an estimated amount of 850,000 euros, payable by the city.

If they concern the general envelope of the building, the joinery, the accessibility for people with disabilities, the reconfiguration of the hall and the bar, which will be called the Bar Du… (Cosmos), nothing is currently planned to improve the sound and projection equipment of the large room.

“It is above all a question of bringing up to standard, in particular fire.

A readjustment of the budget will probably be necessary later,” admits the mayor of Strasbourg Jeanne Barseghian.

The work should run for about eight months.

It will therefore be necessary to wait until early 2023 to find the historic cinema listed as a historic monument and its large room with red armchairs, which allowed the cinema to have been elected in 2021 to the 29th place of the most beautiful cinemas in the world by the British cultural magazine Time Out.

The cosmos ?

A name chosen after "a lot of debate but which ended up being unanimous because we have the impression that it is very suitable and says a lot of things to the philosophy of the project", explains Till Zimmermann, president of Third Breath.

“The cosmos has no center, it's very important, it's constantly evolving, all the elements interact.

In short, there is always something going on in the Cosmos and obviously it includes everyone.

“As hoped for this future cinema.

The association of 14 people will even be transformed by the summer into a collective interest cooperative, like what is being done in Marseille with the Belle de Mai or the Utopia cinema in Bordeaux.

This will allow “all those who wish to participate in its organization, the programming” advances the collective.

This will be broken down into cycles lasting three to four weeks, around two axes: cinema as an art and cinema as a witness to societal issues.

Because the will of the Third Breath is to go far beyond a simple neighborhood or arthouse cinema that will remain.

The intention is to make it a place of life, mixing, punctuated by events, workshops, attractive with participatory communication, "image education", with a studio installed on the current mezzanine … But also to give pride of place to different artistic disciplines such as publishing and illustration, music, contemporary art and even performing arts.

Place will be given to personalities from the world of cinema but also to local artists and productions, from the university, independent artists, to the local audiovisual sector.

In relation with the inhabitants, "open to the street", the future cooperative wishes to establish bridges with other cinemas, festivals, but also associations, socio-cultural centers, schools,

projects co-constructed with the teachers… The small room upstairs will be fitted out accordingly with removable armchairs, to make room for events, even “poufs” for the youngest, image the collective.

“For a cinema that belongs to all Strasbourg residents.
