The agreement between the Italian energy group Eni and the Algerian giant Sonatrach will, among other things, make it possible to make greater use of the gas pipeline which links the two countries.

This Transmed gas pipeline would only be operated at two-thirds of its capacity.

An additional three billion cubic meters should be delivered this fall, volumes will then gradually increase to 9 billion cubic meters of gas per year in 2023-2024.

At the same time, Rome and Algiers signed a declaration of intent on bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

The President of the Italian Council Mario Draghi specified that Italy was ready to work with Algeria on the development of renewable energies and green hydrogen.

These agreements come as, on the one hand, Algeria is

at odds with Spain

, one of its biggest gas customers

,

and on the other, Italy is seeking to reduce its supply from Russia. .

According to the Italian press, Mario Draghi could go to Mozambique and Angola after Easter.
