British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been fined for breaking lockdown rules.

This was confirmed by the British government on Tuesday, according to a report by the PA news agency.

The BBC had previously reported about it.

Finance Minister Rishi Sunak is also said to have received a fine.

Police had been investigating several parties at the Prime Minister's office in London that had taken place during lockdown in the UK.

Johnson has always denied knowingly breaking the rules.

On at least one occasion he felt he was at a work meeting, he said.

According to the government, it was unclear to which of these parties the penalties relate.

Police had investigated 12 gatherings at 10 Downing Street from 2020 and 2021.

At the time, the country was under strict lockdown rules because of the pandemic.

Johnson, who was personally present on several occasions, also had to defend himself against demands from his own party to resign over the "Partygate" affair.

However, these decreased after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In this crisis, Johnson presents himself as Ukraine's first helper, who calls Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj almost daily and leads the way with sanctions against Russia and arms deliveries to Ukraine.

Recently he even visited Kyiv.

As more and more pictures and details of the parties became known, the government was forced to have them investigated.

The officer Sue Gray then published her report at the end of January this year.

It said some of the behavior at the Prime Minister's office was "difficult to justify".

She also accused the government of serious "failures of leadership and judgment".

This report, only partially published, served as the basis for Scotland Yard's investigations.

Her full report is due to be released after Scotland Yard's investigation is complete.

According to reports, there are concerns in the government about who could be named there.

In the past few months, there have been occasional news from the investigation.

It became known that the suspects had been sent questionnaires that they had to fill out under threat of punishment.

Two weeks ago it became public for the first time that the police had sent out notices of fines – there are now more than 50. However, they did not say who they went to.

However, the government had previously promised to make public should Johnson or Sunak be affected.

The amount of the fine was said to be between £50 and £60.

The leader of the opposition Labor Party, Keir Starmer, called on Johnson and Sunak to resign on Tuesday.

The Conservatives are unable to govern properly, he said.

“Britain deserves better.

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak broke the law and repeatedly lied to the public about it.

You both have to step down," Starmer said.

However, Johnson's resignation seems unlikely, since displeasure with his misconduct in his own party had recently subsided.

The future of Rishi Sunak, on the other hand, is more unclear as he has drawn criticism on several occasions in the recent past.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Johnson said: "I have paid the fine and I apologize wholeheartedly." He ruled out resigning.
