Three women have been arrested in Iran for dancing in a cemetery.

A video had been posted on social networks, showing them dancing in the cemetery of the “martyrs” of Nichapour, in the northeast of the country.

The city prosecutor, quoted by the

Tasnim

news agency , confirmed their arrest on Saturday.

"The families of the martyrs have been hurt" by the behavior of these women, he added without revealing more details about their identity or age.

Dancing in public banned in the country

“The young women expressed remorse and apologies for committing an act against social norms,” the prosecutor also said in his statement.

An investigation has been opened into these facts.

In Iran, the law in force since the Islamic revolution of 1979 prohibits dancing in public, except between people of the same sex.

"Dancing is not a crime in itself", according to Iranian jurists.

“However, if someone dances in public or on the Internet in a way that could violate public decency they can be prosecuted.
