Deployment in the east

According to the Ukrainian army command in Kyiv, they are expecting a major offensive by the Russian armed forces in the east of the country “very soon” after a large number of battalion tactical groups (BTG) have already been relocated to the eastern parts of Ukraine.

Ramzan Kadyrov, a close ally of Putin and ruler of the Russian republic of Chechnya, has threatened further attacks on Ukrainian cities.

"There will be an offensive ... not only on Mariupol, but also on other places, towns and villages," Kadyrov says in a video published on his Telegram channel.

First Luhansk and Donetsk will be "completely liberated", then Kyiv and all other cities will be taken.

The Russian troop deployment in the Donbass can also be seen on satellite images.

Recent images from satellite operator Maxar show a large military convoy made up of hundreds of vehicles, including armored personnel carriers, artillery and transport vehicles.

The convoy covers at least 13 kilometers and is moving south through the town of Velykyi Burluk, east of Kharkiv.

Discussion about EU oil embargo

After the European Commission has already proposed to sanction coal imports from Russia, this embargo could also be extended to crude oil.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the fifth package of sanctions announced on Tuesday would not be the last.

"Now we need to look at oil and the revenue that Russia gets from fossil fuels."

In 2021, Russia exported roughly $109 billion worth of crude oil, accounting for 22.1% of Russia's total merchandise export of $493 billion.

Almost half of Russian oil revenues were generated in EU countries and the UK.

The largest single customer in 2021 was China, which purchased Russian oil worth around 35 billion dollars.

The hopes of the Russian leadership in the event of a European embargo are also directed towards Asia.

Five oil shipments totaling 6 million barrels (barrels of 159 liters) have gone to India since early March, roughly half of Russia's total shipments for 2021.

withdrawal around Kiev reveals numerous war crimes

The Russian troops have largely withdrawn from the greater Kyiv area.

Just three weeks ago, the Ukrainian capital was surrounded by Russian units in the north-west and east.

In the town of Bucha, north-west of Kyiv, the Ukrainian territorial defense discovered numerous dead civilians after the Russian units had withdrawn.

The victims appear to have been deliberately killed by the Russian attackers.

Satellite images from the American operator Maxar from March 31 show a mass grave on the grounds of the Church of St. Andrew the First Called.

As of Monday, the civilian death toll rose to 410.

The exact extent of Russia's remaining presence in northern Ukraine is still unclear.

After the rapid withdrawal of Russian troops, Ukrainian forces advance slowly, carefully evacuating individual villages.

After Russia announced in the previous week that it would reduce its offensive efforts around Kyiv and Chernihiv, there are now signs of a comprehensive withdrawal of the armed forces from these fronts.

Ukrainian troops reported on Sunday that they had regained control of the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant and thus parts of the border with Belarus.

So the focus of the conflict now seems to be completely shifted to the southern and eastern fronts.

Russia shifts its offensive eastward

After the negotiations held in Istanbul on Tuesday, Russian negotiators announced that Russia would "drastically reduce its military activities towards Kyiv and Chernihiv".

The Russian delegation attributed this decision to progress in negotiations.

The announcement to limit Russian operations in northern Ukraine follows earlier indications of a reorganization of Russian forces in those areas.

According to reports, Russia has already begun withdrawing individual battalion groups from the north-east.

Over the past few days, Ukrainian troops have successfully launched several counterattacks around Kyiv, possibly aided by these Russian troop shifts.

On Monday, the mayor of Irpin announced that the Ukrainian army had liberated his city, which had been heavily contested since the beginning of the war.

The city is strategically located on the Irpin River of the same name, which forms a natural barrier in the north-west of Kyiv.

The Ukrainian armed forces also managed to recapture some areas further outside of Kyiv, for example around Makariv in the west and at Rudnyts'ke in the east.

Northeast of Oktyrka, Ukrainian forces even managed to counterattack as far as the border with Russia.

Only in the east do the Russian armed forces continue to record steady land gains.

The cities of Izyum and Sievjerodonetsk have been heavily contested for several days.

Deputy Chief of Staff Sergei Rudsko announced on Friday that Russian troops would be concentrated in the Donbass region.

In view of this, it is to be feared that the fighting in this region will intensify in the coming days.

Germany aims for energy independence from Russia

Since the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Germany has been trying to reduce energy supplies from Russia.

According to Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens), things are going well.

“Companies let contracts with Russian suppliers expire, don't renew them and switch to other suppliers.

And at an insane pace,” said the Vice Chancellor.

In the case of hard coal, the companies have reorganized contracts and supply chains.

This will reduce dependency on coal from 50 percent to around 25 percent in the next few weeks.

Germany could become independent of Russian hard coal by autumn.

Dependence on Russian oil is also expected to drop to around 25 percent.

At the end of the year, independence is also being sought here.

Progress has also been made in converting the gas supply, but the process is demanding.

American liquefied natural gas (LNG) is expected to make a major contribution to this.

The USA wants to deliver another 15 billion cubic meters this year.

Above all, however, the volume is expected to increase to 50 billion cubic meters per year in the coming years, thereby replacing a third of Russian gas.

Russian troops are losing more and more war material

On Thursday, the Ukrainian armed forces managed another heavy blow against the already faltering Russian war logistics.

A Russian landing ship was wrecked in the port of Berdyansk, a city on the Azov Sea southwest of Mariupol.

According to reports, the ship was hit by a medium-range missile.

Webcam footage shows intense fires below decks, suggesting that substantial amounts of fuel, ammunition, or other military equipment were still on board at the time of the attack.

Two other DropShips also appear to have sustained minor damage.

The three ships docked in the port of Berdyansk earlier this week to land armored personnel carriers and other military material.

The destruction of the Russian warship is just the latest episode in a long series of Russian materiel losses.

Dutch military analyst Stijn Mitzer documents losses of military material and vehicles on the Oryx website.

Only losses that are confirmed by photo or video evidence are counted.

The numbers are therefore only to be understood as a lower limit and are sometimes far below the information provided by the Ukrainian authorities.

However, even this conservative information paints a clear picture: the Russians have lost at least 280 main battle tanks since the fighting began – about as many as the Bundeswehr has in total.

For the Russians, that's 15 to 25 percent of their original combat strength, but estimates vary widely.

More than 500 armored personnel carriers were lost, as well as "high-value targets" that were difficult to replace in the form of airplanes, helicopters and ships.

The number of casualties includes both destroyed vehicles and vehicles captured by Ukrainians.

A special feature of this conflict is that both warring parties are mostly using the same material dating back to the Soviet era.

So, an abandoned Russian tank is not only a loss for the Russian army, but also a potential addition to the Ukrainian arsenal.

So far, only very rough estimates are available for the number of Russian soldiers who have died so far.

US intelligence officials this week gave a conservative estimate that more than 7,000 Russian soldiers were killed in fighting in Ukraine at the end of February.

On Monday, the pro-Kremlin tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda published figures from the Russian Defense Ministry: 9,861 dead, 16,153 wounded.

After a few minutes, however, this information was deleted again.

The newspaper later claimed that its website had been hacked.

Standoff in North and South, Russian successes in East

In the fourth week of the war, the advance of Russian troops on most sectors of the front came to a standstill.

The Ukrainian armed forces are still able to repel Russian attacks on Chernihiv, Sumy or Kharkiv in the north-east of the country.

Near Mykolayiv in the south, Ukrainian troops were even able to retake places.

Only in the east have Russian forces made steady progress in recent days, moving west out of separatist-held Donbass territory.

The spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashenkov, said in Moscow that fighters from the self-proclaimed "People's Republic" of Donetsk had advanced another four kilometers into Ukrainian territory.

Fighting for the capture of three villages near the city of Donetsk.

Russian forces continue to make slow progress in the encirclement of Mariupol.

A Russian advance on Isjum, however, could be repelled.

West of Kyiv, Ukrainian forces managed to regain control of some suburbs.

The Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces reported that the strategically important suburb of Makariv had been recaptured.

The recaptures are a success against Russian efforts to encircle the capital from the northwest.

An assessment released Sunday by the Institute for the Study of War says Russian forces are likely to expand their bombing campaign on Kyiv rather than attempting to encircle the city in the coming weeks.

The group also reported that Russian forces are now stepping up defensive positions in captured areas and moving artillery to positions capable of hitting central Kyiv.

The failed blitzkrieg

The Russian attack on Ukraine did not become a blitzkrieg.

More than three weeks after the attack on Ukraine, the Russian ground offensive is making little progress.

Despite gaining some ground at the beginning of the attack, the Russian blitzkrieg and the rapid capture of Kiev failed.

This is due to the underestimated resilience of the Ukrainians, but also to their own logistical problems.

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) wrote on Saturday evening that militarily “a stalemate in most of Ukraine” was within reach.

Meanwhile, the Russian army continued to intensify its bombing of Ukrainian cities.

In the first week of the attack, airstrikes were concentrated in the greater Kyiv area.

From the second week of the war, the western parts of Ukraine came under fire.

Daily arrests at protests in Russia

Thousands of protesters across Russia have been arrested during protests against the war in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion.

According to current data from the civil rights organization OWD-Info, there have been almost 15,000 arrests in 151 cities in Russia since the beginning of the war on February 24;

the number increases every hour.

From Wednesday to Thursday alone, another 20 people were arrested who had spoken out against the war, which is not officially considered as such in Russia.

Most recently, on March 13, the Russian security forces took violent action against demonstrators.

Almost 900 people were arrested in nationwide protests in 37 cities, said OWD-Info.

There were larger rallies in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk on Lake Baikal and in the southern city of Novosibirsk.

In St. Petersburg, journalists were also among those arrested.

Ukrainian counterattack on the Kherson air base

A satellite image provided to the FAZ by private satellite operator Planet Labs shows a successful attack by Ukrainian forces on the Kherson air base in southern Ukraine.

The picture was taken on March 15, 2022.

Several large sources of fire are clearly visible, along with fuel depots and a number of burning helicopters.

Russian forces took control of the strategically important base on the north bank of the Dnieper about two weeks ago, and since then there have been repeated Ukrainian counterattacks.

The satellite image underscores that Ukrainian forces remain capable of inflicting significant casualties on their Russian opponents behind their lines.

Missing range of the Russian army

The Russian advances into Ukrainian territory have not progressed beyond a certain line for days.

They fail because of the bitter resistance of the Ukrainians and because of their own logistical problems.

According to Western calculations, 140 kilometers is the maximum range for the Russians to be able to supply their combat units with fuel, ammunition, grenades and rockets from logistics bases.

So far, the Russians have not been able to set up new advanced logistics centers.

They don't have enough trucks to do that.

According to Ukrainian data, the Russians have lost more than 400 supply vehicles in combat so far.

Half of them were destroyed, the other half was captured by the Ukrainians.

The Russian attack is also based on supply and transport via railways.

"The logistics forces of the Russian army are not designed for large-scale ground offensives far from their railway network," analyzes American officer Alex Vershinin.

"No other European nation uses railways to the extent that Russia does."

Attacks on a military training ground near the Polish-Ukrainian border

According to official figures, at least 35 people were killed in the Russian attack on a military training ground near the Polish border.

134 others were injured and were being treated in clinics, said the governor of the western Ukrainian region of Lviv (Lemberg), Maxym Kosyzkyj, on Facebook on Sunday.

By noon, all fires on the site had been extinguished.

Experts are now examining the damage.

The training ground is northwest of Lviv and only about 15 kilometers from the border with Poland.

Meanwhile, fighting around the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, continues, according to the Ukrainian army.

The military announced on Sunday morning that there was heavy fighting in Irpin and Makariv in the Kyiv region.

The situation is similar in other villages, the humanitarian situation is getting worse and worse.

The Russian army shelled the Kiev suburbs with artillery

Images from Maxar's WorldView-2 satellite on March 11 show that the Russian military is continuing to advance towards Kyiv and is shelling suburbs.

The pictures show the towns of Ozera and Moschtschun northwest of Kyiv.

Muzzle flashes from artillery pieces placed in residential areas in Ozera can be seen using the multispectral illustrated books.

Even if the targets of these attacks cannot be confirmed, burning buildings and impact craters can be seen in the town of Moschchun, about seven kilometers southeast of where the artillery was deployed.

A fuel depot at Hostomel Airport is also on fire.

The power supply is restored in the damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the power supply in the damaged nuclear power plant in Chernobyl has been restored.

According to this, energy technicians from Belarus are supplying electricity for the power plant.

Ukraine said on Wednesday that due to the cut in the power line between Kyiv and the power plant, there was a risk that the fuel elements could no longer be cooled and that radioactivity could escape.

The facility is currently controlled by the Russian Armed Forces.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the blackout had no critical safety implications.

In order to discuss the safety of the nuclear power plants in Ukraine, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi traveled to Antalya, Turkey, where the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Russia were discussing.

The talks ended without results.

New escape corridors

For the second day in a row, civilians in Sumy in north-eastern Ukraine fled the besieged city via an escape corridor.

Mayor Olexandr Lysenko said on TV that people started driving out of the city in their private vehicles after the corridor was established.

According to the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Wereschuk, further escape corridors have also been agreed.

A twelve-hour ceasefire is also to apply on the routes from Enerhodar to Zaporizhia in the south of the country and from Izyum to Losowa in the east.

Three more routes have been set up in the Kiev region.

This should allow civilians to get to the capital from the suburbs of Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel.

However, the escape is hampered by destroyed roads and bridges.

Images taken by the US satellite company Maxar on March 8 show a destroyed bridge near Irpin.

Several bomb craters can be seen in and around the fields.

Russian troops gather supplies, await reinforcements, and shell suburbs north-west of the capital with artillery and rockets.

Russian troops have also advanced into Brovary, east of Kyiv.

According to the think tank, a large-scale ground offensive on the Ukrainian capital could take place in the next 24 to 96 hours.

Meanwhile, the UN refugee agency UNHCR reports that the number of people who have fled Ukraine has passed the two million mark.

Russia threatens to stop gas supplies from Nord Stream 1

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Nowak threatened in the evening with a delivery stop through the Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 1.

"But we're not making that decision yet.

Nobody wins," said the politician.

However, Russia now sees itself pushed in this direction by European politicians and their accusations.

Russia felt provoked by the American threat and the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

"We have every right to make a fair decision," Nowak said on Russian television in the evening.

The European Union obtains more than a third of its natural gas requirements from Russia.

60 billion cubic meters of natural gas flow through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline alone every year.

Although European natural gas production is not insignificant, it has been falling faster than consumption since 2015.

Alternatives are being sought to reduce dependency on Russian gas.

Economics and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck recently gave the go-ahead for the construction of the first liquid gas terminal in Brunsbüttel, Schleswig-Holstein.

Over 1.7 million Ukrainians on the run
