Why are these parties in the NATO issue right now?

- Much because of the Finnish process.

On Wednesday, the Finnish government's security policy report will be released, and there is much to suggest that it can go fairly quickly after that and that the parties in Finland that have not yet landed in a position will do so in the coming weeks or maybe even days in some cases. .

And if that process lands in a yes, then both S and SD need an answer.

How difficult would it be for S and SD to turn in the NATO issue?

- It is not straightforward in any of the parties, but even here it is very much about Finland.

As for SD, Jimmie Åkesson wants to ensure that he has the party board's mandate to make a quick decision on a possible turnaround to minimize possible internal protests.

For the Social Democrats, the internal dialogue that will now start is a way to anchor a possible new security policy line.

If the conclusion is that a NATO membership is the best tool for securing Sweden's security, S will also want to emphasize other parts of its foreign and security policy and how they can work with a possible membership in the defense alliance.

But just as within SD, the outermost party leadership, that is, the party leader, has a strong mandate in this matter, but the decision will be made by the party board.

What would be the consequences of a fluctuation for a possible Swedish membership in NATO?

- Should both SD and S advocate a NATO membership, it is only the MP and V who are against with their 43 parliamentary seats.

But whether it then means that Sweden is already applying at the NATO summit in Madrid at the end of June is unclear, it depends a lot on how Finland lands its process.

But a turnaround from S and SD would probably make Swedish public opinion follow suit and then it would be a clearer yes to NATO than what we have today.

According to the latest survey from Novus, 43 percent of Swedes are in favor of membership, but if Finland joins, 63 percent think that Sweden should do the same.
