• The first round of the presidential election gives birth to a new Macron Le Pen duel.

  • In the Pas-de-Calais, it is the National Rally which, as usual, comes first.

  • But this is not the case in the prefecture of the department, Arras, where Macron still manages to get ahead of the president of the RN.

The day after the first round of the presidential election, Marine Le Pen can rejoice.

For her third participation in this election, the boss of the National Rally (RN) made her best score, barely three points behind the outgoing president, Emmanuel Macron.

In the Pas-de-Calais, his hunting ground, we are close to the plebiscite, especially in Hénin-Beaumont, laboratory of the RN.

Nevertheless, the call of the Front is not heard everywhere with the same ear in this department.

This is the case in Arras, the prefecture of Pas-de-Calais.

If Marine Le Pen comes first in Hauts-de-France with 33.36% of the votes, her lead is even more obvious in Pas-de-Calais where the president of the RN peaks at 38.68%.

Nothing surprising in view of the scores obtained by his party in previous elections.

There are even some municipalities where the results of the RN border on indecency.

Guinecourt, a village of 19 inhabitants, Marine Le Pen obtained 69.23% of the votes.

Conversely, it is in the seaside town of Le Touquet, stronghold of Emmanuel Macron, that the RN has its lowest score in the department, 10.67% of the vote.

Arras stands out from the other major towns in the department

So many anecdotal examples, of course.

That of the prefecture of the department, Arras, is less so.

With 24.04% of the votes cast, the boss of the RN exceeds her score at the national level but remains however behind the outgoing president and his 29.48%.

Except that this trend fades and then reverses as soon as the circle is widened.

At the level of the Arras constituency and its 87,000 registrants, the ranking remains the same but the gap is narrowing with 30.47% for Macron and 27.39 for Le Pen.

By dragging the slider further to observe the votes of the 188,000 registered at the district level, the situation changes radically.

Marine Le Pen puts 7 points to the LREM candidate and takes the lead with 34.58% against 27.55%.

The equation does not hold true in the other major cities of the department.

In Lens, Calais or Boulogne-sur-Mer, the RN comes first in the first round, thus proving that Arras is indeed resisting in a territory now anchored on the far right.

It's not just for fun either that Emmanuel Macron decided to make his first trip between the two rounds in Pas-de-Calais on Monday.
