Who is the "Agha" who shook hands with Mohammed bin Salman in the Prophet's Mosque?

The image of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, shaking hands with one of the aghas in the Prophet's Mosque, raised wide questions among activists in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia about these people and their job.

The widely circulated photo documented the handshake of Prince Muhammad bin Salman, one of the men of the "Aghawat" group, before performing the obligatory prayer while he was in the Prophet's Mosque.

Who are the Aghas?

The name of the aghas is given to the men who have devoted themselves to the service of the Two Holy Mosques, and they are brought under certain criteria that fit the 40 tasks assigned to them.

At the present time, the "Aghas" are about to close the curtain on this stage after the late King Fahd ordered them to stop coming, and today the youngest of them has exceeded nine decades, and their numbers have decreased from hundreds to 4 people.

Al-Arabiya.net quoted the specialist in the history of Medina, Fouad Al-Maghamsi, as saying: "The first appearance of the agha dates back to the Ayyubid era, and they were brought from Beyond the River, Sindh and India, and the majority from Abyssinia and Africa."

Al-Maghamsi added: “The (Aghas)’s tasks vary, such as guarding the honorable Prophet’s chamber and supervising its private matters, and they are distinguished by ranks like the military ranks, numbering 12 ranks.

Keys to the Prophet's Chamber

Among the ranks of the "surrendered" aghas, he has the keys to the honorable Prophet's chamber, so he supervises the harvests of wax and oil, and receives what is given to the group in cash and in kind.
