The EU has presented its fifth sanction package against Russia, which will, among other things, stop Russian coal and Russian ships.

It is now also clear which new individuals will receive sanctions against them.

One of them is Oleg Deripaska - who is already on the UK, US and Australian sanctions lists.

SVT has in a number of publications examined his financial interests in Sweden.

Among other things, he is the largest individual owner in Russian Rusal, which in turn owns the Kubal aluminum smelter in Sundsvall.

Owns a weapons company

As justification for the new sanctions, the EU Council writes that Deripaska owns companies that are important suppliers of weapons and military equipment to the Russian armed forces and that were used during the invasion of Ukraine.

"Therefore, he is responsible for supporting or implementing measures or policies that undermine or threaten Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence, or the stability or security of Ukraine," the Council wrote.

Invoiced Swedish authorities

Oleg Deripaska is also a major player in the Austrian construction group Strabag.

The group includes several Swedish companies that have invoiced authorities billions for large infrastructure projects - including Förbifart Stockholm, Citybanan in Stockholm and Marieholmstunneln in Gothenburg.

Strabag has distanced itself from the Russian major owner and in an email to SVT wrote that he has no influence over the operational activities.
