The Polisario Front announced this Saturday its decision to suspend contacts with the current Spanish government after showing its support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara.

The General Secretariat of the Polisario has explained, through a statement, that "in view of the concrete steps" that the Government of Pedro Sánchez has taken, it has decided to suspend contacts with the Spanish Executive to distance itself "from using the Saharawi issue ".

The statement, issued this morning and

dated in Bir Lehlu

(Western Sahara), indicates that the decision is made after supporting the "illegal proposal of the Moroccan occupier who intends to legitimize the annexation of the Western Saharan territories by force and

ignoring the inalienable rights of the Saharawi people

to self-determination and independence".

Stupor among diplomats with the pact signed with Morocco: "Spain has not achieved anything"

"The Polisario Front decides to suspend its contacts with the current Spanish Government (...) within the framework of miserable dealings with the occupier, and until

it adheres to the resolutions of international legitimacy

that recognize the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and

respect the borders

of their country as they are recognized internationally," he details.

The Polisario has assured in the letter that

Spain "has responsibilities" towards the Saharawi people and before the United Nations

, since "it is the administering power" of the region, "whose responsibilities do not prescribe".

They also thanked the Spanish Congress of Deputies and the "broad and transversal

movement of solidarity"

with their cause, for "so strongly" urging the Spanish Government on the "need to return to the path of international legality".

Last Thursday, Spain and Morocco established a new stage in their relations with the meeting in Rabat between King Mohamed VI and President Pedro Sánchez, a meeting arranged after Spain's change of position by endorsing Morocco's proposal that the former Spanish colony Western Sahara is an autonomous region within Morocco.
