"Today, I had a last imagery and finally it's not going in the right direction. At this point in my career, it's better to rest a bit to get the big goals I have. We have made the decision to withdraw, unfortunately, once again from the tournament", explained Monfils who has not played in the Monegasque tournament since his lost final in 2016.
"I have had foot pain for a few days, since Miami," he said, stressing however that he had hoped to play the Monegasque tournament on clay until the last moment.
"I arrived here, I had a good week of training," he said.
Monfils should have started his tournament against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz (14th).
