From whooping cough to pariah?

British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak was until recently adored by the Conservatives.

But since his fiscal arrangements were revealed his aura has diminished.

These include the millions saved in taxes by his wealthy wife and the US green card he owned until last year.

“At a time when the chancellor is asking people to pay so much more tax […] of course the public expects the minister's family to be affected in the same way as the others,” pointed out Sunday on the BBC Labor MP Yvette Cooper.

Akshata Murty, the wealthy Indian wife of the Rishi Sunak, benefits from the status of "not domiciled" in the United Kingdom, even though she lives in London, allowing her not to pay taxes to the British tax authorities on her foreign income.

After the criticism, she announced on Friday that she would give up this advantage.

Rishi Sunak's name also appears in tax haven trusts

"The question is not whether it's legal, but whether it's ethical," said Yvette Cooper.

“And the fact that they [Akshata Murty and Rishi Sunak] have changed their arrangements now shows that they recognize that it's a problem, but they wouldn't have done it if it hadn't been made public.

The government will launch an investigation into the origin of Akshata Murty's tax status leak, British newspaper

The Sunday Times

reported on Sunday , citing a government source.

Rishi Sunak is also being criticized for his lack of transparency after admitting on Friday that he had until last year had an American "green card" granting him permanent resident status in the United States.

His name also appears in trusts in the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands, two tax havens, according to

The Independent

newspaper .

Defended by the Secretary of State in charge of the police

The green card "actually added more complexity and more financial obligations, not less," Police Secretary Kit Malthouse told Sky News on Sunday.

“Rishi Sunak has been a valuable asset to this country over the past few years.

He has put in place incredible support programs during the pandemic,” he said.

A young Tory rising star, Rishi Sunak had spent lavishly to help Britons during the pandemic.
