Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI) arrived widely in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Guyana, this Sunday, in the first round of the presidential election.

These overseas regions “elected me for their president from the first round”, greeted the leader of La France insoumise after the announcement of the first estimates at the national level.

According to the final results, it is in Guadeloupe that he won his best score, with 56.16% of the votes cast, in a region where abstention reached 55.25% of those registered.

With 53.1% and 50.59% of the vote respectively, Jean-Luc Mélenchon also has the majority in Martinique and Guyana, despite abstention, again very high (57.32% and 63.84%).

A sharp drop in participation rates in New Caledonia and Polynesia

In general, the participation rate in the first round of the presidential election fell sharply in several overseas territories, including New Caledonia and Polynesia, which voted in advance.

However, it is slightly increasing in Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The highest abstention rates are found in the Pacific: in French Polynesia, only 23.78% of voters had moved to 5 p.m., according to the estimate of the High Commission.

They were 43.97% to have moved in 2017 at the same time.

In New Caledonia, the participation rate at 5 p.m., two hours before the closing of the polls, was 33.04% against 41.80% five years earlier.

Arrived third nationally, Jean-Luc Mélenchon called for "not to give a single voice to Madame Le Pen", who will be opposed to Emmanuel Macron in the second round.
